Queen Alexandra (1844-1925)

Oil on canvas | RCIN 405360

This portrait exudes sophistication and grace, presenting Alexandra, then in her mid-60s, as a leader of fashion. As Princess, she had popularized choker-style necklaces, first worn to cover a small scar on her neck. Here she wears an intricate diamond necklace, made by Cartier in 1904, accompanied by Queen Victoria’s small crown. The diaphanous gauzy haze of her gown gives the portrait an ethereal quality.
