WILLIAM HOGARTH (1697-1764)

The Family of George II

c. 1731-2

RCIN 401358

This full-sized oil sketch was probably painted to be presented to the King for his approval. It shows the royal family arranged in the type of landscape garden then becoming fashionable. The presence of the garden temple immediately behind the throne may have been intended as a symbol of the British Constitution which deliberately upstages the royal pair.
