LODOVICO CARDI (CIGOLI) (1559-1613)

Two servants

1591

RCIN 905190

The drawing is executed in Cigoli’s distinctive technique of broad brush and ink on dark prepared paper. It is a study for an altarpiece of the Emperor Heraclitus carrying the True Cross into Jerusalem, painted for the silk-weavers’ guild for their chapel in San Marco, Florence. One of the servants bears the emperor’s peaked hat on a platter.
