Pan boasts that his reed pipes make better music than Apollo’s lyre. Tmolus, the local mountain god, turns to Minerva (on the extreme right) and chooses Apollo as the victor. Midas, King of Phrygia, disputes the verdict. As punishment, Apollo gives Midas the ears of an ass. The free brushwork is used to heighten the drama of the story.
