FRANCESCO SEGALA (1559-92)

Pair of firedogs with Mars and Hercules

1580 - 1680

RCIN 1008

The bases of these firedogs were first made for the noble family whose arms are partly included on the shields, perhaps the Ghisi or Riva of Venice. The two standing figures were modelled by different artists. The Hercules (holding a club) has been attributed to the Paduan sculptor Francesco Segala (1535-1592). First recorded in 1724
