The Orders Services
The Englishman Francis Gardner established his porcelain factory in Russia in 1766. Catherine II placed a significant commission with Gardner in 1777 for services decorated with the insignia of the Russian orders of chivalry. They were used once a year at the Winter Palace when the knights of the orders dined on the saint’s day of their order. The Royal Collection contains pieces from all bar the Order of St Alexander Nevsky.
