Snuffbox with inset miniature of Catherine II of Russia (1729-96)

c.1783

RCIN 19122

The Russian court followed European practice, creating richly decorated gold boxes adorned with the ruler’s portrait as diplomatic gifts. The miniature of Catherine II is after a portrait by Dmitri Levitsky. The box with its numbered stone specimens, is similar to the work of the celebrated Dresden maker Johann Christian Neuber (1736–1808).

Given by Queen Mary to King George V, 1931.
