CHRISTIAN CARL PETERS (1822-99)

Princess Alexandra's Danish fan

1863

Carved and pierced ivory with applied gold; gold pin with turquise head | 25.4 cm (guardstick) | RCIN 25033

This finely carved fan was a wedding present to Princess Alexandra of Denmark from a group of Danish ladies. The decoration includes two conjoined As, the first initials of both the bride and the groom, Alexandra and Albert Edward. Appropriately the pin of the fan is set with turquoise, the birthstone for December, the month of Princess Alexandra’s birth, as well as being symbolic of true love.
