HM The Queen Reading in the Private Dining Room, Windsor

RCIN 406980

As well as being a patron of the arts, Prince Philip is a talented painter and designer. Following the Prince’s marriage to Princess Elizabeth in 1947, the artist Denys Dawnay (1921 – 83) gave Prince Philip his first paintbox and easel. The painter Edward Seago was also a major influence on the Duke’s style and approach to painting. This painting of Her Majesty The Queen reading at the breakfast table is unusual amongst Prince Philip’s paintings as The Duke tends to favour landscape subjects over figure paintings. Prince Philip works exclusively in oils and continues to paint at Windsor and Balmoral.
