David Hockney (b. 1937)

1975

RCIN 2117970

Kasterine was commissioned by Radio Times to photograph Hockney in his Paris studio, where the artist worked between 1973 and 1975, but he soon decided to move the sitting outside to one of the ancient courtyards of the building with its ivy-clad walls and cobbled paving. ‘I knew at once that it was there that I wanted to photograph him’, recalls Kasterine, and the result is a frank, almost candid portrait of the sitter, whose style and dress sense denote the conscious unconventionality of the bohemian artist.
