An artist drawing from a statue
c. 1630RCIN 913092
Drawing from classical sculpture became part of the training of artists during the Renaissance, and this practice later became something of an industry in Rome, to serve the demands of antiquarian collectors from across Europe. In this page from a sketchbook Claude depicts what must have been a common sight in Rome, an artist seated on a scaffold to raise him to the level of a statue so that he can make an accurate drawing of it.
