KAREL DU JARDIN (AMSTERDAM C.1626-VENICE 1678)

A Muleteer and two Men playing the Game of Morra

RCIN 406208

Morra is a game like ‘Rock-Paper-Scissors’ with a synchronised show of hands; the two contestants shout out their guess as to the total number of fingers extended. In this Roman street scene it seems to be a metaphor for idleness to be compared with the work taking place in the background. Acquired by George IV in 1818 Cat. 7
