PARMIGIANINO (PARMA 1503-CASALMAGGIORE 1540)

Portrait of a Young Nobleman

c.1530-32

Oil on panel | 98.5 x 82.4 x 3.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406025

An underlying unease permeates this portrait. From the strained pose, mysterious surroundings and limited palette, we glean little sense of who this unidentified man is, where he is or what he is telling us. His travelling cloak and the door frame behind, with patch of green beyond, are the only clues.

First recorded at Whitehall Palace in 1666
