Jacob Fleeing from Laban

Much like the mythological and religious scenes of Claude and Dughet, Lauri sets an Old Testament narrative in a landscape. Jacob rides a horse at the centre, covertly leading his wives, children and livestock away from Laban, possibly seeking directions towards Mount Gilead. Although Jacob is in full focus, the figures and animals around him are painted more softly. They eventually merge with the background, enhancing the scale of his flock and accumulated riches.
