Charles I, Henrietta Maria and Charles, Prince of Wales (later Charles II)

This is a portrait of the royal family at home, where the Queen occupies the throne. It has dignity and authority, in the crown and sceptre laid on the table, but also informality, in its small scale and the prominence given to the baby prince balanced on the table’s edge. The painting was presumably commissioned by Charles I, but there is no record of it in his collection.
