MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN (1647-1717)

Golden Tegu lizard

c. 1705-10

RCIN 921219

The Golden Tegu lizard (Tupinambis teguixin) is one of the largest lizards in the world. This drawing was probably based both on observation and on a dead specimen brought back to Amsterdam. Merian noted that the Golden Tegu was not dangerous to humans.
