TŌYŌ, OKAMOTO (1891–1969)

Weeping cherry tree branches

1925-29

Gelatin silver print | RCIN 2862271

A photograph depicting the ground floor of a traditional Japanese building with a raised stone terrace that runs along the length of the frame. Four steps lead from the terrace to the ground level. In the foreground, two parallel bamboo poles divide the composition in three, while a continuous series of pendulous cherry-tree branches cascade elegantly from above. The numerous vertical and horizontal lines seen in this image demonstrate Okamoto's careful use of composition and framing.
