Square vessel

A Japanese Folk Craft movement emerged in the early twentieth century in reaction to the country’s rapid industrialisation and westernisation. Potters like Hamada Shōji sought to return to rural values and simple techniques. Here, Hamada has achieved a spontaneous effect by interspersing gritty sand-coloured patches with a rich persimmon glaze. Brushstrokes of bluish-green were applied with a homemade brush fashioned from coarse dog hair.
