Comb

1800 - 1900

Wood, gold lacquer | 3.7 x 9.5 x 1.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 29461

Combs were an essential component of fashionable female dress by the late Edo period (1800–60). They were worn in the hair as accessories alongside ornamental hairpins. Here, a minute beach scene evokes Japan’s long coastline.
