MICHELSEN : COPENHAGEN

Bowl

hallmark 1894

Silver, parcel gilt | 6.6 x 11.9 x 11.9 cm (whole object) | RCIN 106051

In the late nineteenth century, increased travel and artistic exchange gave rise to a new fashion in Europe called japonisme, inspired by Japanese forms and styles. This bowl by the Danish firm Michelsen presents a carp – a common Japanese motif – with the restrained air of a woodblock print. The relief decoration mimics inlay on Japanese metalwork.
