Nov 1789

RCIN 810361

A hand-coloured print of a busy Parisian street scene, with the statue of Louis XIV dominating the image. This is one of Rowlandson’s most famous prints, based on a watercolour which he exhibited in 1783. The print was published six years later, in response to public interest in France prompted by such events as the storming of the Bastille in July 1789 and the march of thousands of armed women on Versailles in October. Lettered in the plate: London. Pubd. Novr. 1789 by S. Alken No 2 Francis Street. East Bedford Square
