The Windsor Martyrs, from John Foxe's Book of Martyrs

c.1570

RCIN 700096

After the reforming legislation of the 1530s, Henry returned to Catholic tenets in 1539. Those who adhered to reforming views now found themselves on the wrong side of the law. In 1543, four Windsor men were burned at the stake to the north of the Castle. Among them was Robert Testwood, a member of the choir of St George’s Chapel. This view of Windsor Castle is only a few years later than that by Joris Hoefnagel.
