Nonpareil and Monitor

James Ward was a superb equestrian artist. He worked in the stables at Carlton House to fulfil his commission to paint three of George’s horses. The bay Nonpareil (‘Without Compare’) was George’s ‘favourite charger’. The horse stands in front of Windsor Castle, shown before George’s extensive renovation which increased the height of the Round Tower.
