BENJAMIN LEWIS VULLIAMY (1780-1854)

Mantel clock

1800-10

RCIN 2764

The clock dial in this work plays a secondary role to the dramatically sculptural case, in the form of the sun god, Apollo, in his chariot. Thomire demonstrates his skill in creating a sense of movement and passing time – there is an urgency to the motion of the horses and the wind tearing at Apollo’s cloak; even the ephemeral clouds are rendered in bronze.

Purchased in 1810
