Girardy was among a number of French artists and craftsmen who Holland employed to work at Carlton House. These two drawings may be for decorations intended for the residence: each half of each drawing shows an alternative design for the wall. The imagery is romantic and feminine and may be connected with alterations planned for George’s marriage.
