SIR WILLIAM BEECHEY (1753-1839)

George IV (1762-1830) when Prince of Wales

1803

RCIN 400511

This portrait was commissioned directly by the sitter as a gift for his brother, Edward. The Prince of Wales is depicted in three-quarter profile, wearing the uniform of the 10th Light Dragoons and the star of the Order of the Garter. His right hand rests commandingly on a cavalry sword. Beechey skilfully combined the dignity of the sitter with an air of spontaneous informality.

Painted for George IV when Prince of Wales for presentation to Edward, Duke of Kent
