SA'DI, OF SHIRAZ (1184-1283-91)

Gulistan

1584

RCIN 1005022

A fine illuminated copy of Sa'di's Gulistan made in the workshop of the Mughal nobleman and personal attendant of Emperor Akbar, Abd al-Mutallib Khan, in Agra in 1584. The calligraphy is by Muhammad Husayn Kashmiri zarin-qalam ('Golden Pen'), a title the emperor gave him in recognition of his skill.

According to notes on its opening page, Abd al-Mutallib Khan presented the manuscript to Akbar as a gift. Other inscriptions include those in the hands of Mughal emperors Jahangir and Shah-Jahan and the seals of Shah-Jahan and Alamgir. The seal of Abd al-Ahad Khan, a close advisor to Shah Alam II (r. 1728-1806) is impressed on every page.
