JAN MIENSE MOLENAER (1609/10-68)

Peasants Merrymaking out of Doors

1650-59

RCIN 405490

These are probably city-dwellers dressed for a party, rather than real peasants. They are grouped by the Haarlem-born artist in a loose triangle formation, with a farmhouse and dovecot behind them. Their play-acting is mocked by the young boy with a hoop in the foreground right. First recorded in the Royal Collection in 1852 No. 1
