The Rye House Plot was uncovered after the confession of one of the plotters, Josiah Keeling. The plan was to ambush Charles II on his way back from a horse race in Newmarket and to kill him and his brother the Duke of York (later James II). Another conspirator was Richard Rumbold, a Cromwellian soldier, whose residence, Rye House, was chosen as the point of the attack. Charles II asked Thomas Sprat to write this account of the plot and made alterations to the text prior to publication.
