CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)
Venice: The Piazzetta looking south
1729RCIN 907441
Here Canaletto places the two columns at the centre of each composition, first looking in from the water towards the Piazzetta and then from the square looking out towards the water. The Doge’s galleon, the Bucintoro, is seen at anchor next to the Doge’s palace, probably for the ceremony of the Wedding of the Sea, held each Ascension Day to celebrate Venice’s maritime dominance. Canaletto painted this subject many times.
