CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

'The Bishop's Tomb'

c.1740

RCIN 807801

The print shows a capriccio with a Gothic monument and ancient ruins, looking towards a town on the water’s edge. Canaletto cut the plate into three separate pieces, possibly because he was dissatisfied with the composition; this is the only surviving impression from the smallest portion.
