Queen Elizabeth II (b.1926) when Princess, 1946

1946

RCIN 2999906

This portrait was taken in the gardens at Royal Lodge, the Royal Family’s country retreat in Windsor Great Park just four miles from the Castle. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth had always taken a particular interest in the gardens there, and had encouraged both Princesses to do likewise by giving each her own plot to cultivate. With the help of Eric Savill, The King and Queen had developed and eventually transformed the gardens, which were designed to be at their best during the months that the family most frequently visited the Royal Lodge – April, May and June.
