Jul 1947

RCIN 2999892

The engagement between Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten was announced on 10 July 1947 and the wedding took place four months later. At the time of the Royal Family’s visit to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, in 1939 he was a Cadet. Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip remained in close touch thereafter, but the official announcement of their engagement was delayed until after the Princess’s 21st birthday. In February 1947 Prince Philip had become a naturalised British subject and had adopted his maternal grandfather’s surname of Mountbatten.
