A 16th-century drawing attributed to the renowned Italian artist, Marco Marchetti, has been brought back to life through meticulous conservation techniques.

The drawing – a design for a large bronze candelabrum – was put onto a wash mount during the reign of George III and folded into an album. Over time, this caused instability. Using different techniques, including magnification, our conservators cleaned off centuries of dirt and grime, and repaired vulnerable areas by relaxing and flattening the paper fibres.

Watch the film to hear Kate Stone, Paper Conservator, explain the careful process behind conserving Marchetti’s delicate artwork.
