Photographs are easily damaged by exposure to light and as a result are not placed on permanent display. They are stored in climate and humidity controlled conditions at Windsor Castle.

Photographs are often displayed in temporary exhibitions at royal residences and are also included in exhibitions at The Queen's Galleries in London and Edinburgh. Loans of photographs are frequently made to exhibitions around Britain and the world.

Copy photographs for research and publication purposes may be supplied by the Royal Collection Picture Library.

Researchers can visit the photograph collection by appointment only and are subject to security clearance.
