    Prince Albert, who greatly esteemed Tennyson's poetry, was given this watercolour (along with RCINs 980947 and 980948, which also illustrate scenes from Tennyson's Enid) by his daughter Princess Alice as a birthday gift (recorded by the date on the work). Enid was first published in 1859 as one of the first set of the Idylls of the Kings, the cycle of twelve narrative poems retelling the legend of King Arthur.
