A watercolour on circular paper showing the head and shoulders of a Montenegrin girl in local dress. After Carl Haag (possibly inspired by his drawing Una Signorina di Monte Negro and Signorina Petrana di Monte Negro). The girl is shown facing forward, with her face turned to the right. She is wearing an elaborate headdress with a tasselled blouse. Inscribed lower right: Louise May 24. 1860.
Inscribed at lower right of folio: From a small sketch of C Haag.
Queen Victoria's children often made cards and drawings for their parents as gift on important dates, such as this watercolour executed by Princess Louise for her mother's birthday on 24 May 1860.
This drawing is housed in one of two volumes, compiled by Queen Victoria and containing works presented to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert by their nine children. For other items in the volume see Princes & Princesses album. -
