While staying at Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots, often stopping at different shiels around the estate.
A new shiel was built in Glen Gelder in 1865. In her journal entry of 14 September 1865, Queen Victoria describes how she thought that the new shiel was "in a charming position, & a very nice little house". -
