A watercolour showing a view of Loch Callater. The loch is shown in the lower foreground, with hills shown rising from its banks behind. Inscribed lower left: Oct: 11. 1879 Loch Callater. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 11 October 1879, the Queen visited Loch Callater with some of her children and grandchildren. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how she "Sat, facing the Loch, which looked most lovely & calm. Afterwards sketched for some time, quite basking in the sun".
