A watercolour showing a view of a Highland landscape near Invercauld. The River Dee is shown in the centre of the lower foreground, with autumnal trees shown on the river banks either side. A forest-covered hill is shown to the right, steeply sloping down to the river. Mountains are shown in the background. Inscribed lower left: Oct: 9 - 17 26 - 1872. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. In her journal entry of 9 October 1872, Queen Victoria describes how she went with one of her Ladies in Waiting "to Invercauld & sketched near the river, taking our tea on the grass". She mentions returning to Invercauld to sketch in her journal entry of 17 October 1872 and in the entry for 26 October 1872 she describes visiting Invercauld "to finish one of my sketches".
