A watercolour showing a view of the Gairnshiel. The little house is shown in the foreground, with trees shown behind. A river is shown to the right and hills are shown in the background. Inscribed lower left: Gairnshiel Sept: 16. 1872. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made made expeditions to local beauty spots. The Queen visited the Gairnshiel with her daughter Princess Beatrice on 16 September 1872. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how on arriving at the shiel they "[took] our tea, & I sketched".
