  • A watercolour showing a view of a Glen Gelder from the Ruidh na Bhan Righ Shiel, also know as the Gelder Shiel. Rocks are shown in the glen in the foreground, with mountains shown in the background. Inscribed lower left: From the Ruidh a Ban Righ [sic] Oct: 7. 1869. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 7 October 1869 the Queen visited the Gelder Shiel with her daughter Princess Beatrice. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how they "took our luncheon outside [the shiel] & I then sketched". Queen Victoria describes in an earlier journal entry (28 August 1865) how "my pretty little Shiel [is] called 'Ruidh na Bhan Righ', which means the Queen's Sheil in Gaelic".
