A watercolour showing a view of a traditional Swiss house in Lucerne. The house is shown in the centre, with vines shown climbing the front. Inscribed lower left: [illegible word] Aug: 28 1868. Queen Victoria stayed at Pension Wallis, Lucerne from 7 August to 9 September 1868. The Queen wanted to see the Alps, which her beloved Prince Albert had visited before their marriage, and her doctors had also advised the Queen that the fresh air would be good for her health. In her journal entry of 28 August 1868, Queen Victoria describes how she and her daughter Princess Louise went on a drive and sketched "one of the pretty Swiss houses".
