A larger version of RCIN 980042.af. A watercolour showing a view of the Ballochbuie forest, near the house of James Bowman. The forest is shown in the foreground, with Highland hills shown behind. A road is shown in the foreground to the lower centre, snaking round to the left. Inscribed lower left: May 31. 1868. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 31 May 1868 the Queen visited the Ballochbuie with her daughter Princess Louise. In her journal entry of that day Queen Victoria describes how they "sat & sketched for some time. It was so lovely, all so peaceful & solitary, only the gentle twittering of the birds, to be heard. The quiet & glorious scenery, the enjoyment of which increases more & more, & the pure healthy air, all do me so much good". James Bowman was the Keeper at Ballochbuie and lived at the Ballochbuie lodge.
