A watercolour showing a view of a Highland landscape from Black Snake Glen. A hill is shown in the foreground, sloping down from the left, with rocks at the bottom. Further hills are shown behind to the right and in the background. Inscribed lower right: From the Black Glen June 9. 1865. 7 o'clock. Inscribed below mounted sheet: From the Black Glen June 5. 1865. 7 o'clock in [illegible word] (cold dinner). This sketchbook has been mounted and rebound. It is likely that Queen Victoria made a mistake with the date when writing the new inscriptions on the folios. Queen Victoria visited The Black Snake Glen during a trip to Loch Builg on 9 June 1865 with her daughter Princess Helena. In her journal entry of that day the Queen describes how they "rode up Gairn Side, through the Black Snake, which is very grand & desolate".
