A hill is shown shown behind the loch to the right, sloping down to the left. Further hills are shown in the background. Inscribed below mounted sheet: Loch Callater - Oct: 3. 1865. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 3 October 1865 the Queen visited Loch Callater with her daughters Princess Alice and Princess Helena. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how they "sketched a little [at the loch], the lights & colouring being quite beautiful".
