Queen Victoria and her family sailed to Cherbourg from Osborne on 17 August 1857 in the Royal Yacht, Victoria and Albert.
The Queen records the view from the Royal Yacht in her journal entry of that day as well as in her sketchbook, describing "The small town picturesquely situated with an old Church, surrounded by a high cliff, on which stands a Fort, & which commands the town on one side."
The Royal Family stayed on the Royal Yacht, making visits to the mainland during the day, until returning to Osborne on 19 August 1857. -
