Inscribed below: Gipsy women near Claremont. From recollection. (The one in the red cloak called Sarah Cooper, the other, her sister-in-law called Eliza Cooper).
Inscribed lower left: P.V. del. Claremont. Dec 10th 1836.
Princess Victoria was fascinated with the Gypsies who had taken camp near Claremont from December 1836 to early January 1837. She spoke to those she encountered on her walks and even provided them with food and blankets during the harsh winter. -
