A manuscript, with watercolour illustrations, bound in red leather. This is Humphrey Repton's 'Red Book' of proposals for work on Brighton Pavilion, submitted for consideration by George, Prince of Wales, in 1806. The watercolours are individually catalogued as RCINs 918069, 918070, 918071 918076, 918077, 918079, 918080, 918081, 981082, 981083, 981084 and 981085.
The volume also includes a letter from Repton to an unknown member of the Prince's household, dated 1815, apologising that 'an Engraver' (presumably J C Stadler, who produced the plates for the published version of the book) has retained the Red Book for so long; a manuscript note on the 'Situation and Character' of the Pavilion (nearly identical with that in the Red Book itself); and 'An Enquiry into the changes in Architecture as it relates to Palaces & houses in England including the Castle and Abbey Gothic, the mixt style of Gothic, the Grecian & Modern styles, with some Remarks on the introduction of Indian Architecture' with watercolour illustrations (individually catalogued as (918072, 918073, 918074, 918075, and 918078).
In the present binding, the pages of the 'Designs for the Pavilion' and the 'Enquiry into the changes in Architecture' are muddled together.Provenance
