This is a smaller version of a dowry chest, which would contain a bride’s dowry, or money, as well as linen, clothing and jewellery. The original chests were often imported into the Middle East from India, built from teak and decorated with elaborate brass studs and plates.

Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, during his State Visit to the United Kingdom, 23–26 May 1995.
